Lai et al. (2015) reported that total fruit intake (g/day) derived from a 217-item Food Frequency Questionnaire was obtained from 30,458 women (aged 35–69 years) at baseline from 1995–1998., the richest sources of phenolic compounds, correlated with improved cardiovascular health with an estimated 6–7% reduction in deaths from CVDs for every 80 g portion. This study concluded that total fruit intake rather than intake of a specific type of fruit is protective against CVD. In terms of specific types of fruits, commonly researched varieties include berries, such as blackberries, raspberries, black raspberries and blueberries, grapes, citrus fruit, pomegranates, strawberries and apples. These fruits are rich in polyphenols like flavanols, flavonols, anthocyanins, procyanidins, sterols, carotenoids, and hydroycinnamic acids.

Globally about 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer (World Health Organization, WHO, 2018, Cancer Statistics).  Yet some of the most common vegetables offer us the best protection against cancer.

Boivin et al., (2009) evaluated the inhibitory effects of extracts isolated from 34 vegetables on the proliferation of 8 different tumor cell lines: breast cancer, brain tumors, kidney cancer, lung cancer, childhood brain tumors, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and stomach cancer.  As you can see in their bar graphs the winners were the Allium family and the Cruciferous family.  Of those two groups garlic and broccoli were the leaders respectively in inhibiting the proliferation of all tested cancer cell  lines.

Cognitive decline is a serious issue. And estimate of 16 million people live with cognitive impairment.  Over 5.1 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease (CDC, 2014; 2011). In 2019, Marcum et al.’s survey found that most people are aware of the risks associated with getting dementia but do not know what to do.

James Joseph and Shukitt-Hale have studied blueberries and brain health for many years (e.g., 2010). Transformation to healthy diets by 2050 will require substantial dietary shifts.  Global consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes will have to double, and consumption of foods such as red meat and sugar will have to be reduced by more than 50%. Livngstone et al. (2019) review the different plant bio-actives and their help in preventing prostate cancer. Here is her abstract and a few suggestions:

Prostate cancer has become the most common form of non-cutaneous (internal) malignancy in men, accounting for 26% of all new male visceral cancer cases in the UK. The aetiology and pathogenesis of prostate cancer are not understood, but given the age-adjusted geographical variations in prostate cancer incidence quoted in epidemiological studies, there is increasing interest in nutrition as a relevant factor. In particular, foods rich in phytochemicals have been proposed to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Epidemiological studies have reported evidence that plant-based foods including cruciferous vegetables, garlic, tomatoes, pomegranate and green tea are associated with a significant reduction in the progression of prostate cancer. However, while there is well-documented mechanistic evidence at a cellular level of the manner by which individual dietary components may reduce the risk of prostate cancer or its progression, evidence from intervention studies is limited. Moreover, clinical trials investigating the link between the dietary bioactives found in these foods and prostate cancer have reported varied conclusions. Herein, we review the plant bioactives for which there is substantial evidence from epidemiological and human intervention studies. The aim of this review is to provide important insights into how particular plant bioactives (e.g., sulfur-containing compounds, carotenoids and polyphenols) present in commonly consumed food groups may influence the development and progression of prostate cancer.
