Can probiotics be used in the detoxification of pesticides?
The answer is yes. The research by Kye Man Cho et al. Biodegradation of Chlorpyrifos by Lactic Acid Bacteria during Kimchi Fermentation, J. Agric. Food Chem.,2009, 57(5), pp 1882-1889, demonstrated that the 4 lactic bacteria used in the fermentation of kimchi, with one of those being Lactobacillus plantarum, are up for the task.
The organophosphorus insecticide chlorpyrifos (CP) was degraded rapidly until day 3 (83.3%) and degraded completely by day 9. The CP could be utilized by the four strains as the sole source of carbon and phosphorus.
