Beta Glucan Synbiotic

Consuming oat β-glucan soluble fibers on a regular basis reduces blood levels of LDL-cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of developing Cardiovascular Disease.

Ho et al. (2016) conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised-controlled trials (RCT) investigating the cholesterol-lowering potential of oat β-glucan on LDL-cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol and apoB for the risk reduction of CVD.

In total, fifty-eight trials (n 3974) were included. A median dose of 3·5 g/d of oat β-glucan significantly lowered LDL-cholesterol (−0·19; 95 % CI −0·23, −0·14 mmol/l, P<0·00001), non-HDL-cholesterol (−0·20; 95 % CI −0·26, −0·15 mmol/l, P<0·00001) and apoB (−0·03; 95 % CI −0·05, −0·02 g/l, P<0·0001) compared with control interventions.

Pooled analyses showed that oat β-glucan has a lowering effect on LDL-cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol and apoB.  The researchers concluded that inclusion of oat-containing foods may be a strategy for achieving targets in CVD reduction.

Therapeutic Food Support:

Research has shown that the catechin family of flavonoids provide protective phytonutrients particularily from catechin, epicatechins and epigallocatechin gallate.

Endothelial dysfunction, a prognostically relevant key event in atherosclerosis, is characterized by a decreased bioactivity of nitric oxide (NO) and impaired flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD).  Schroeter et al., (2006) showed in healthy male adults that the ingestion of flavanol-rich cocoa was associated with acute elevations in levels of circulating NO species, an enhanced FMD response of conduit arteries, and an augmented microcirculation.

Nagao et al., (2007) observed, in a protocol sample of 240 subjects, that green tea extract high in catechins reduces body fat and cardiovascular risks including a decrease in systolic blood pressure. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was also decreased to a greater extent in the catechin group.

Lorenz et al., (2007) investigated the effect of milk in preventing the beneficial effects of tea relative to vascular protection, and found that casein in milk binds to catechins inhibiting their beneficial functioning as antioxidants.  Their conclusion was that milk counteracts the favourable health effects of tea on vascular function.

The wilds of Alaska provide an amazing environment for powerful plants and berries— fertile volcanic ash soil, and a harsh environment that challenges plants to put out high levels of phenols (e.g. flavonoids) to protect themselves.

Last week one of our doctors reported the following successful protocol for a new patient with a declining condition of Parkinson’s Disease (PD).  The patient could barely walk.

After analysis, the doctor added these three products:

After two months the patient is now walking 4 miles a day.  And was having increasingly long stretches where she was feeling very well.

Gao et al., (2012) found that daily intake of dietary flavonoids lowers the risk of developing Parkinson disease in a large cohort of 49,281 men and 80,336 women that were followed for 20-22 years.  In general, high amounts of flavonoids, such as anthocyanins, quercetin, epicatechin, and proanthocyanidins were found to be protective. People who eat less blueberries and strawberries are more likely to develop PD. During that time 438 men and 367 women developed Parkinson Disease. Other studies show that blueberry and strawberry extracts increase dopamine release alleviating oxidative stress and suppressing neuroinflammation (Balk et al., 2006).

A number of factors play into the risk reduction or even a turnaround into better health: researchers have known for a long time that more fiber and lower animal fats reduce the risk of PD (Renoudet et al, 2012). The combination of fiber, probiotics (to produce L-dopa), and polyphenols in the Beta Glucan and No 7 all play part in the healthy functioning of our nervous system.

What is the connection between the microbiome and heart heatlh? The microbiome’s metabolites are emerging as the deciding influence for good or bad health. We will dive into this topic in the next couple of weeks (check green facts below).

BG photoAs Dr. JoAnn Manson, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital says in Healthy gut, Healthy Heart(2018):

There’s a complex interplay between the microbes in our intestines and most of the systems in our bodies, including the vascular, nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.  All of these relationships are highly relevant to cardiovascular health.

What we eat plays a major role in the composition of our gut microbiota.  And we’re learning more about how the substances gut microbes churn out (called metabolites) influence our risk for many chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

The Beta Glucan High Potency Synbiotic: Cardio-Metabolic Support is a great product for seeding the gut with good pedigreed bacteria and prebiotic fibers that strongly support the integrity of the GI tract membrane, support the reduction of GI tract inflammation, support the strengthening and balancing of the immune system.

Oats and oat beta glucan have enjoyed a rich cultural historicity and extensive research on heart health (Andersson & Hellstrand, 2012).  Oats and oat beta glucan are found to reduce serum LDL cholesterol (Ho et al., 2016; Zhu et al., 2015; Whitehead et al., 2014; Wolever et al., 2010), improve liver function (Chang et al., 2013), and promote bowel regularity (Clemens, 2012; Mobley et al., 2014).*

Red beetroot offer a rich source of phyto-nutrients, including ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carotenoids, phenolic acids, and flavonoids. Beets provide a source of dietary nitrate, shown in research to have important implication for heart health (Kapil et al., 2014). Beet’s nutrients are shown to prevent oxidation of LDLs, lower triglycerides, and balances blood pressure (Clifford et al., 2015; Eggenbeen et al., 2016; Hobbs et al., 2013).*

Inulin from organic chicory root supplies food for the probiotic organisms. Probiotic organisms need fiber to grow and multiply. See Slavin (2013) on fiber as prebiotics, and Dehghan et al. (2013) on inulin and cardiovascular support.*  Together with probiotic, inulin is also found in research to help tighten cell junctions, which is thought to aid against leaky gut syndrome (Cani et al., 2007, 2007a, 2008, 2009).*
