We are in the cold and flu season.  Science finds specific foods that are amazing in the treatment of sore throats, colds, fever, congestion, and achy body.

The protocol we use is very effective: 

  • No. 7 Systemic Booster– 1 tsp. daily in a glass of water.
  • Organic Garlic– 1-2 capsule daily X 2. For sore throat, open capsules and mix with No. 7 in water, drink slowly.
  • Organic Chlorella– 4-8 tablets daily.
  • LactORN- 1 level tsp. twice a week. Take extra tsp during a cold/flu infection. Chew the powder to stimulate the oral immune system (it is on the sticky side).

We use this protocol successfully with stomach flu as well.

Food Science

Colds and Flus begin with the mucous membranes of our body— the oral cavity, the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and respiratory tracts, and the mammary gland.  They represent the largest surface area of our body exposed to the pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa of the outside world.

Our GI tract alone embodies a surface area the size of a full tennis court with most of it only one-cell layer thick.  70% of our immune system resides on the inside surface of the gut membrane.  Because we bring in 20 tons of food in a life-time it is our most vulnerable Port of Entry for infections.

No. 7 Systemic Booster (click on this link to see the ingredients in the No. 7)

Lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacteria such as are found in No. 7 have shown to be able to reduce the number of participants who experience upper respiratory tract infections in the best study to date by Hao et al. (2011)— Probiotic for preventing acute upper respiratory tract infections.

The two studies by Gill et al. (2001) and Sheih et al. (2001) describe subjects who were given a probiotic regime between weeks three to six (of the cold) and saw a significant boost in the ability of their white bloods cells to gobble up invaders.  The same boost was found in the ability of their natural killer cells to kill cancer cells.

Organic Garlic

Garlic offers a broad spectrum antimicrobial against bacteria, viruses and protozoaAt the same time it is not hard on the lactic acid probiotic organisms.  Take a large glass of water, open up a capsule of the garlic in the water.  You will smell the antimicrobial agent allicin being forming.  Each capsule contains 4 to 5 cloves of organic garlic.  Now add one tsp. of the No. 7 to the drink (Ankri, 1999; Bakri, 2005).

Organic Chlorella

Boosting the immune system without exacerbating allergies and autoimmune disease is one of the important benefits of Chlorella.  A big part of the front line of defense within the mucous membranes is the IgA- the secretary immunoglobulin A (SIgA).

The research of Yamauchi et al (2011) and Otsuki et al. (2012) not only demonstrated an increase in human participants levels of SIgA, but also an increase in their levels of NK cells (Natural Killer cells) and the corresponding reduction in upper respiratory infections (URI).

LactORN

LactORN contains the probiotic Lactobacillus casei grown in a way to retain its natural ORNS (oligoribonucleotides).  Plus it contains the prebiotic inulin derived from organic chicory root.  There are no other ingredients.  Its dairy free, soy free, gluten free (as is No. 7).

Think of this product as your immune system boosting tool.  Across animal species the LactORN has been shown through research to support immune system competencies to prevent infections cause by viruses and bacteria ( Marshall, 2007).

How does our new Organic Chlorella help combat flus and colds?

Research studies, such as Yamauchi et al. (2011; 2012), and Otsuki et al. (2012), find Chlorella enhances SIgA levels in the mucus membranes.

Chlorella also enhances the blood levels of Natural Killer cells (Kwak et al, 2012; Davis et al., 2010). And is shown effective by Azocar J, Diaz A. (2013) in the treatment of chronic Hepatitis C viral infections.

Let’s discuss the science behind this amazing green plant:

Our body’s mucous membranes are vulnerable “Ports of Entry” for pathogens entering into our body.  Approximately, 95% of all infections are initiated at the mucosal surfaces: nose, throat, GI tract, urinary tract and lungs (Walsh, 2011).

Our immune system’s job is to protect us from these assaults; its natural antibodies like secretory IgA (SIgA) are amongst its frontline armament.  Healthy SIgA levels minimize the risk of “getting the bug”.  Excess stress can reduce SIgA levels, resulting in more colds and flus, including respiratory tract infections such as pheumonia and influenza (Klentrou, 2002).

Food Science:

Chlorella is an unicellular green algae which provides us with key nutrients, including a vast array of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, all of the essential amino acids, nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), dietary fiber, and a wide range of antioxidants, bioactive substances and chlorophyll.  It is the number one selling food supplement in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Amongst its many valuable attributes it enhances our immune function, supports natural detoxification, supports cardiovascular health, helps balance the body’s pH, and is a vegan protein source.  In this Forward Thinking we are focusing on its immune system benefits.

Chlorella enhances SIgA levels in the mucous membranes throughout the body.

It is well understood that too strenuous exercise can cause a lowering of an individual’s secretory IgA levels and increase his/her risk of illness.  Epidemiolgoical studies suggest that highly trained athletes are more susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections compared with the general population (Yamauchi et al, 2011).

The focus of Yamauchi and associates study was to examine the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation and the appearance of upper respiratory symptoms (URS).  Their results demonstrated that the number of URS increased along with the EBV-DNA expression and decrease of SigA levels.

This decrease suggests that the athletes were at an increased risk of developing an upper respiratory tract infection, and therefore, it could be necessary to take protective actions to minimize catching cold viruses or even activating endogenous viruses like EBV.

Reducing the training load would be one way to increase SIgA, but Otsuki et al. showed another way.  In previous research Otsuki demonstrated that chlorella intake daily increased the secretion rate of SIgA in humans.  In their later 2012 study they additionally demonstrated that those participants in a Kendo training camp who consumed chlorella daily attenuated the drop in SIgA, a reduction experienced by other participant who didn’t take the chlorella supplement.

Chlorella enhances the blood levels of Natural Killer Cells (NK cells).

NK cells are cytotoxic effectors of innate immunity that distinguish between healthy and malignant or virally-infected cells.  It is critical to have NK cells present optimal levels to protect the body from cancer and viral infections.

Kwak et al, (2012) demonstrated the beneficial effect of short-term [duration of study] Chlorella consumption on its enhancement of NK cell activity, and produced INF-y and IL-12 as well as IL-1beta—the Th-1 cell-induced cytokines.

Chlorella supplementation enhances clinical outcomes in patients with Hep. C.

It is estimated that up to 4 million persons in the US have chronic Hepatitis C virus infection (Davis et al., 2010).  After three month of chlorella supplementation, Hepatitis C patients reported as follows:  Quality of Life- 76.9% of the participants reported an improvement in their energy levels, 46.1 % reported an improvement in their perception of general health,   84.6 % of these patients had a significant decrease in their ALT levels (which is a marker for liver inflammation) from week 0 to week 12.  Evaluation of side effects showed that Chlorella was well tolerated by all participants.

These results add to the growing literature on the beneficial immunostimulatory effect of Chlorella supplementation.

Clinical Note:

Cold and Flu Season Support

Condition:  Feeling like a sore throat is coming on, or maybe it’s fully arrived.  Try the following:

Take a glass of water and mix in the powder from one or two capsules of the garlic.  After about a minute add a heaping teaspoon of No. 7 Systemic Booster to the water.  Stir and drink slowly so as to coat and treat the mucous membrane of your mouth and throat.  Next, take a level teaspoon of the LactORN, allowing it to dissolve in your mouth, priming your immune system.

Garlic, Organic, Freeze-dried

Overview:

This exceptionally potent supplement boasts four to five cloves of organic garlic in every capsule.  Known as the Russian Penicillin, garlic has been used for centuries therapeutically as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial; and over the last thirty years this has been our focus as well.

Each bottle contains 90 capsules of pure, high actives, organic garlic.  This QAI Certified garlic is exceptionally potent at 10,000 ppm alliin.  At 400mg garlic per capsule this translates to 2.65 mg of allicin per capsule.  That’s it.  No excipients of any kind.

Suggested dosing:

Take one to two capsules and open them up, pouring the powder into a glass of water.  Stir, allowing the whole garlic clove powder to react with the water.  In about 40 seconds you will have freshly produced allicin, garlic’s premier antimicrobial substance.  Swig it around in your mouth, slowly swallowing it, gargling as it goes down the hatch into you stomach.  You are treating the whole mucous membrane of the GI tract with this powerful broad spectrum antimicrobial for a lot of pathogens.  The amazing feature of garlic is that it is non-toxic to the Genera of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.  Our probiotic organisms are unharmed, yet at the same time it stops a lot of bad bugs right in their tracks.

Usually one dose is enough.  But if more is needed a couple times a day for a couple of days should do it.

LactORN, Lactobacillus ORNs

Overview:

LactORN contains the probiotic Lactobacillus casei grown in a way to retain its natural ORNs  (oligoribonucleotides).  Plus it contains the prebiotic inulin derived from organic chicory root.  There are no other ingredients.  Its dairy free, soy free, gluten free.  Just good bugs with their ORNs and fiber.  It has a  naturally sweet taste because of the inulin, but no glycemic load.

Think of this product as your immune system boosting tool.  Across animal species, the LactORN has been shown through research to support immune system competencies to prevent infections caused by viruses and bacteria (Marshall, 2007).

Suggested dosing:

Take one level teaspoon slowly into your mouth allowing your saliva to dissolve the powder.  If you need just a little water to support the dissolving process do so.  The point is to allow the Lactobacillus casei to release its oligoribonucleotides into your oral cavity.  A chain reaction will then occur as immune cells imbedded in oral tissues respond to these ORNs by releasing stimulating cytokines that restore the powers of the immune network.  An alert immune network successfully defends the host against viruses and bacteria without side effects.

One dose will prime the immune system for 3 to 5 days.  If needed take two doses per week.

No. 7 Systemic  Booster

Overview:

No. 7 Systemic Booster boasts a high potency proprietary blend of our Bulgarian probiotic bacteria, plus an important fusion of organic whole fruit and berry extracts, chicory root soluble fiber, with carefully selected complimentary nutriceuticals, that together support the strengthening of many of our body’s systems, including supporting our immune system.
