A Healthy Longevity

What is longevity?  What brings on the glow of a robust health in both younger and older people? According to the US National Institute of Aging (NIA), longevity is about measured strategies to extend the healthy functioning of our body (Nadon et al., 2008) – these strategies aim to prevent diseases, especially chronic illnesses like cardiovascular and cancer, among others (Caprara, 2018).*

Globally, while the average life span has increased in both developed and developing nations, in the next 30 years the aging population will double to 22%, or about 2 billion people. Since there are about 7.7 billion people in the world, this means that almost a quarter of the world will be over 60 years old (United Nations, Ageing, 2017).*

Old age causes a variety of biological and cognitive degenerations, yet the decline does not have to be debilitating. Just the opposite, with the correct approach toward prevention, healthy longevity can be achieved (Jin et al., 2015). The World health Organization (WHO) has focused their efforts on addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), or chronic illnesses, such as cancer, ischemic heart diseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and more, as a preventative approach and a path toward longevity (WHO, 2014; see also Lim et al., 2012 global assessment of both infectious and NCDs diseases).

Historically, in the developed world, longevity was thought of as an anti-aging approach that emphasized looks and energy rather than the whole health. Skin care, makeup, supplements, hormones, and medicines were created to hide age and stimulate our bodies into producing more energy and higher hormonal levels. Merchandise was fused with procedures to tighten or erase wrinkles and skin discolorations, sucking or adding fat, depending on the area treated, to name a few treatments (e.g., Ganceviciene et al., 2012). Mostly, the anti-aging movement was aimed to make women look younger and men more virile.*

The New Longevity represents a comprehensive approach to health and long life (Jin et al., 2015). This new approach to longevity (or healthy ‘anti-aging’) does not solely focus on how we look but how our bodies function healthily from youth to old age (Fontana et al., 2014).

Today, chronic diseases are the world’s biggest killers, responsible for an estimated 35 million deaths each year. That’s 60% of all deaths globally. Among those over 65 in the United States, 85% suffer from one or two chronic diseases…. Studies are showing that dietary polyphenols contribute to the maintenance of intestinal health by preserving the gut microbial balance through the stimulation of the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria while inhibiting that of pathogenic bacteria.

Dueñas et al.’s (2015) study, A survey of modulation of gut microbiota by dietary polyphenols, showed that the beneficial effects attributed to dietary polyphenols appear to be due more to phenolic metabolites formed in the gastrointestinal tract, mainly derived from the action of gut bacteria than to the original forms found in food.

This all occurs in the colon where the growth of good bacterial friends is enhanced by polyphenols while at the same time the beneficial attributes of the polyphenols are made possible by their reduction into shorter chain lengths by the enzymes of these good bacteria.  Making their antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammtory, healthy aging, cell signaling effects more bioavailable throughout the body.

Duda-Chodak et al. (2015) present possible pathways of polyphenol metabolism by intestinal bacteria and describe the diet-derived bioactive metabolites produced by gut microbiota, with a particular emphasis on polyphenols and their potential impact on human health.

Joy et al.’s (2016) study, Ancient peat [ultra minerals] and apple extracts supplementation may improve strength and power adaptations in resistance trained men, aimed to determine the effects of a proprietary blend of ultra minerals derived from ancient peat and apple extracts on athletic performance. It was hypothesized that supplementation would improve strength and power over the duration of the training program as well as blunt a decrement in performance due to overreaching.

Overreaching is a training volume and/or intensity of exercise resulting in performance decrements.  In the state of overreaching, the adaptation capacity to training load is decreased.  In the state of overreaching one can not achieve optimal performance and is more susceptible to illness and injury.

Their conclusion was that the proprietary blend of plant ultra minerals and apple extracts (Energy) were capable of increasing lower body and total strength as well as lower body power output compared at an equal-volume, visually-identical placebo.  Moreover, the supplement was able to prevent performance decrements commonly associated with increased training volume and overreaching.

Suggested use: one capsule a day.

GS Photo JPEGBroccoli sprouts provide an exceptionally rich source of sulforaphane – a potent inducer of enzymes that protect against chemical carcinogens.  In fact, three-day-old sprouts of broccoli contain 10-100 times higher levels of glucoraphanin (the glucosinolate of sulforaphane) than do the mature broccoli plants.  Broccoli sprouts are the richest natural source for sulforaphanes, and the BioImmersion organic broccoli sprouts selected for the Glucosinolate & Sulforaphane are at the 100 fold level.

Our Glucosinolate & Sulforaphane replaces the Cruciferous Sprout Complex as it supplies 6-8 times the potency of the most important phytochemical, sulforaphane.

Food Science

Broccoli sprouts are a rich source of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, shown in research to induce phase 2 detoxication enzymes, boost antioxidant status, and protect animals against chemically induced cancer.  Glucosinolates are hydrolyzed by myrosinase (an enzyme found in plants and bowel microflora) to form isothiocyanates.  Glucosinolates are inert as phase 2 enzyme inducers and must be hydrolyzed (break-down) to generate the active isothiocyanates (Shapiro et al., 2001).

Sulforaphane (SFN) is a compound derived from cruciferous vegetables with numerous bioactivities (Su et al., 2018). In fact, Broccoli and especially broccoli sprouts, accumulate significant amounts of the phytonutrient glucoraphanin, which is metabolized in vivo to the biologically active sulforaphane (SFN).  The preponderance of evidence available from in vitro, animal and human studies supports the association of sulforaphane with phase II enzyme induction (James et al., 2012), moreover, SFN strongly displays both anticarcinogenic and anticancer activity by modulating ‘key signaling pathways and genes involved in the induction of apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, and inhibition of angiogenesis’ (Su et al., 2018; see also Peng et al., 2015; Zhang & Tang, 2007).

SFN also upregulates a series of cytoprotective genes by activating nuclear factor erythroid-2- (NF-E2-) related factor 2 (Nrf2), a critical transcription factor activated in response to oxidative stress; Nrf2 activation is also involved in the cancer-preventive effects of SFN (Peng et al., 2015).

Sulforaphane is found in research to have many different health benefits:  Alzheimer’s (Kim et al., 2013), Cardiovascular Disorders (Angeloni et al., 2009), Diabetes (Bahadoran et al., 2012), Asthma- upper airway congestion, (Riedl et al., 2009) and Detoxification in all cells, and in particular with Liver Phase II detoxification enhancement (Riedl et al., 2009).

Sulforaphane (SFN) has been demonstrated to be an effective chemopreventive agent for many years (Shapiro et al., 2001), with positive effects against different kinds of cancers, such as cervical (Chen et al., 2016; Abdull et al., 2013), breast (Peng et al., 2015; Li et al., 2010), bladder (Leone et al., 2017), renal cell carcinoma (Juengel et al., 2016), non-small-cell lung cancer (Wang et al., 2017), and colon and prostate cancers (Clarke et al., 2008; Abdull et al., 2013).
